My Monitoring Journey

MUM 6 Silk to MUM 6 Beryllium
Professional Monitors
from Present Day Productions

My Monitors of choice over the last year has been the Present Day Productions MUM 6 Silk model.

I chose the MUM 6’s following seeing the advertisement on the PDP channel regarding their development of an affordable High End Monitor series to develop a Dolby Atmos system for their own studio. I arranged to visit James & Mark at their Studio so i could hear their then new MUM 8’s in October 2023.

James was kind enough to give me a demo of the Pre-Production MUM 6’s that he was working on and…. That was it…. I’m Sold. They blew my current monitors out of the water with the Clarity and dynamics coupled with an amazing phantom centre giving superb imagery that I was looking for. These were an Ideal size for my available Studio Space.

Moving on over 12 months later after using the Silk model I have now upgraded to the beryllium tweeters.

A question I had for myself was, after 12 months of mixing and mastering on MUM 6 Silks with a steady level of improvement and client satisfaction, would an upgrade be justifiable?

Upon initial critical listening I can confirm that the Silks are slightly Darker and give a smoother high end, but i felt i needed a more clinical high end as my experience was developing and i was carrying out more and more mastering so the upgrade was instigated.

As I’m not too far from PDP Headquarters I was able to contact James to arrange a visit for the upgrade to be carried out which entailed swapping out the Silk tweeters for the Beryllium items, this was then paired with an update to the DSP. After this was completed, it would have been Rude if I did not have a listen to the brand new MUM 10’s…….OMG, These boys have really got their S**t together with their Monitor designs, Stunning Monitors, Simple (to the Eye) but executed with perfection.

Now that the upgraded MUM 6 Be monitors are back in my studio and after numerous hours of more critical listening in my own studio I can confirm that the High frequencies are a lot more clear and defined, Vocals are sweeter sounding, all Highs are more controlled which I can only put down to the transient reactions due to the reduced mass & increased stiffness of the tweeter matched with the secret DSP adjustments, the imaging has tightened up and more focused giving a better soundstage.

Don’t get me wrong, the silk tweeters were precise and clear, but the Beryllium tweeters are like a surgeon’s scalpel in comparison, they just cut through the sonic landscape with a sonic accuracy that I have been looking for.

I don’t know fully what James has done to the DSP update, but the mid frequencies are also now more controlled and defined. We are talking small moves in each area, but the overall package has now given me a monitor that I can critically listen to and know that I’m hearing will translate exactly how i want it to for my clients.

In Conclusion, If you are in the market for a set of high end monitors at what would be considered an affordable cost (considering the market equivalent) then look no further that the PDP MUM range of Monitors.
